End of Summer Home Maintenance Tasks

Whether we want to admit it or not, fall is approaching! Each season brings new opportunities to tackle home projects around the house both as a homeowner and as a home seller.

Below is a list of key things to tend to in preparation of the upcoming fall season!

Organization

As the end of summer winds down, think about areas of your home that have summer clutter.

Garages and backyards are common areas that are home to beach toys, water play, outside accessories and more. Even if you plan on continuing to use these items into the fall, it never hurts to develop a good system for storage so that it is easy to put away.

For home sellers, part of preparing a home for sale is to de-clutter and organize. The house should be staged to reflect the use of each room with tasteful decor and storage.

All the normal house clutter needs to be stored away. Grab a few large plastic totes and store those summer things away for next year as you welcome buyers in to scope out your home.

Cleaning

The tell tale sign of a busy summer around the house is often the mess it leaves. Patios, windows and outdoor equipment will need a good power washing. Even the siding of a home may need to be cleaned due to pollen from the spring or other environmental debris.

For home sellers, this step is an important one, as curb appeal is a buyer’s first impression of a home. Make your home sparkle to wow the buyers! Not sure where to start? Check out these 7 ways boost your curb appeal!

Home Systems Check

The best time to find out your furnace isn’t working is before you need it. End of summer and early fall can be a good time to schedule an HVAC appointment to ensure your furnace is in working order.

The fall season has its fair share of storms and rain, so inspecting a roof for any loose tiles and shingles is good prevention for water leaks in the home.

Home sellers should also be on top of how the systems and structure of their home are working. It would be best to have these items fixed before a home inspectionpicks it up later on through the buying process.

Painting

Painting projects can be done year round but exterior painting can be a bit trickier in the colder months as most paint has to be applied only above certain temperatures.

The end of summer is a great time to either touch up or give your house a whole new color! Home sellers as mentioned above should have their home exterior looking fresh and a new coat of paint can do wonders.

Landscaping

Each season has its own set of beautiful flowers and plants. The end of summer also marks the end of their blooms. Homeowners should go through their flower beds and pull any withering annuals and weeds out to prepare for the fall plants and flowers.

Many flowerbeds may need mulch reapplied. Mums, asters, goldenrod, sedum and helenium are all nice fall flowers that can be added to landscaping to give it a burst of fall color!

Home sellers will want to do their best to show that their home looks beautiful in all seasons and boosting landscaping design will help to accomplish that!
