The Historic Savannah Theatre
Savannah, Georgia’s architecture and history are as internationally known as its reputation for Southern charm and hospitality is, and The Historic Savannah Theatre is one of Savannah’s oldest historic treasures. With a history that is rich in musical variety and has been since 1818, the theatre’s first shows were the comedy “Soldiers Daughter” and the farcical “Raising the Wind.” Entertainers like W.C. Fields, Oscar Wilde, Lillian Russell, Edwin Booth and Sarah Bernhardt graced the same stage that now hosts mostly Broadway and musical performances like the current line up which includes Southern Nights, The Beat Goes On and Savannah Live!
Fire in 1948 caused serious damage to the theatre and major renovations were needed. Today’s Savannah Theatre was restored to its original splendor in 2002, keeping the 1940′s art deco style and adding a state of the art sound and light system that makes you feel that you are in the center of the show. The current owners cut their teeth in the Branson, Missouri’s music district, wanting to create their own theatre company in Savannah, since it has a year-round tourist stream. As it turns out, locals provided the steady uptick in ticket sales, loving to have a taste of old-time Broadway and musicals in their own backyard.
There are still a soaring number of tourist buses that include a stop at 222 Bull Street giving visitors a chance to view the Historic Savannah Theatre or to take in a show, but the locals keep the Savannah Theatre beat going on all through the southern nights.
