Savannah Is Gearing up for the 29th Annual National Night Out

The best way for communities to prevent crime is for neighbors to get to know each other, police say.  Tuesday, August 7, 2012 is your opportunity to get out and meet your neighbors and to say no as a community to crime and drugs as the city of Savannah hosts its annual National Night Out event.

National Night Out is a crime and drug prevention event designed to heighten community awareness while garnering support for anti-crime programs.  In its 29th year, communities from across the nation participate with block parties, rallies, and other activities designed to unify and mobilize communities to take action again crime and drugs.  The nationwide push to bring police and the community closer was started by the National Association of Town Watch in 1984 and according to NNO’s website, last year’s National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, over 37 million people participated in National Night Out 2011.

These are the events planned in communities around Savannah and Chatham County:
