Tips For Keeping Cool And Safe Amid Rising Temperatures
Georgia’s Savannah and Richmond Hill residents know it can get hot in the lowcountry in the summer. Although most of us welcome hot weather, when it’s too hot for too long there are health risks. There are steps you can take to avoid being overcome by the hot and humid conditions. Here are some tips to help keep you cool, and safe, amid rising temperatures:
•Wear loose, cool clothing, and a hat if you go outdoors.
•Drink cold drinks, such as water and fruit juice, regularly to avoid dehydration and ensure that children stay well hydrated as well. Avoid tea, coffee and alcohol.
•Avoid or minimize physical exertion and direct exposure to the sun.
•Have cool baths or showers, and splash yourself with cool water.
•Eat cooling foods, cucumbers, watermelons, grapes, asparagus and mint, help to cool down the body.
•If you have no central air, put a box fan securely into a window facing out to blow the hot air out of the room and shut curtains in rooms where the sunshine is coming in to keep cool.
•Do not let anyone, including your pet, sit in a hot, parked car, not even for a few minutes.
•Don’t forget to check up on friends, relatives and neighbors who may be less able to look after themselves.
•It’s not only important for people to keep their cool, but it’s also very important to keep a close eye on your pets. Dogs cool down mainly by panting, but if it’s so hot that panting isn’t getting the job done, a dog’s body temperature will continue to rise. To prevent overheating, avoid excessive exercise and always provide cool drinking water.
