Memorial Day in Savannah, Ga can mean different things to many people, while overall it’s a special time dedicated to honoring and remembering our United States war veterans and everything they have done and have gone through to preserve how we have come to live. What better way can you think of to truly appreciate this time of year than attend a Memorial Day Candle Light Ceremony?
Gather your friends and family and head to Emmet Park, located along E. Bay Street near the Savannah River. Named after Irish orator and patriot Robert Emmet, the park is large with several memorials, historical markers, the old harbor light, and a half dozen anchors. There is a Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial which stands where a Maritime Monument’s remains are, as well as a Hussars’ Memorial that is an artifact from the Siege of Savannah – an iron cannon that is strapped to a concrete block.
The Memorial Day Candle Light Ceremony will honor all veterans from all wars the United States was involved in. The event begins at 6:30pm on Sunday, May 27, 2012 with music by the ‘Brass Quintet of the 3rd Infantry Div. Band. The guest speaker this year will be MG Jeffrey Phillips of the US Army.
Highlights of the ceremony are:
- POW/MIA table ceremony will be presented by Susie Stephens-Harvey.
- A bell will be rung for each war the United States has been in.
- There will be a rifle salute, with taps being played.
- A wreath will be laid
Seating is limited for this event, so you are asked to bring your own chairs and arrive early. It’s nice that they will be playing music from 6:30-7:00pm until the official start of the ceremony. The ceremony is over at 8:00pm, so that means there is still plenty of time to grab some food at any of the nearby restaurants like Bayou Cafe & Blues Bar, Pirate’s House, 17 Hundred 90 Inn Restaurant, Vic’s on the River, or Moon River Brewing Company, just to name a few.
How do you remember and honor U.S. war veterans on Memorial Day?
